Smoking Cessation in Recovering Alcoholics
There are so many areas to look at when it comes to smokers and smoking cessation. A stop smoking program can't fit the needs of all types of people. For example, almost 85 percent of people who are in alcohol recovery smoke compared with 25 percent of the general public. Imagine having gone through the success of quitting problem drinking AND having to quit smoking. The American Family Physician reports that smokers in alcohol recovery may be more addicted to nicotine than smokers who don't have a history of alcohol abuse. But, it is also reported in their findings that smokers who are in recovery from alcohol abuse can stop smoking without starting to drink again. Because smoking and drinking usually go together, smoking can lead to a stronger craving for alcohol. So hypnosis for smoking cessation during treatment for alcoholism, or right after treatment, can actually increase your chances of staying sober.
But even though it would be best to quit any harmful habit, be it drinking or smoking, it must be done on your time, when it feels right for you. And like with any other habit we decide to quit, like smoking cessation, it’s always best to do it with some assistance, like a program or support system. It's that tough it out mentality that is almost always a sure fire way to make the ending of a habit short lived. And as many recovering alcoholics realized, what seemed to be impossible became possible. There is a chance that any problem behavior or bad habit you have can be overcome and the substance we choose as the coping mechanism can be replaced with something healthier. The task is finding what that something healthier is. Expand your view of life, look in places you never imagined, try new hobbies and meet more people. It's amazing what can be found when we actually look.
